Fairer Travel Isn't a Trend – It's the Future of Luxury Travel.

Reflections from the TTG Fairer Travel Conference - London - 30th June 2026

Luxury travel has always been about creating extraordinary experiences. But increasingly, the conversation is shifting from where we travel to how we travel.

Attending the TTG Fairer Travel Conference last week reinforced something we've believed at Woodward & Lane for some time: responsible travel and exceptional travel are no longer separate conversations. In fact, they're becoming one and the same.

Across the day, industry leaders, destinations, tour operators and sustainability experts explored the challenges facing tourism—and, more importantly, the opportunities to create a more balanced future.

Here are the themes that stood out.

Over crowding at the Acropolis in Athens during Peak Season.

Over tourism isn't about stopping travel—it's about travelling smarter

One of the strongest messages came from destinations themselves.

Rather than discouraging visitors altogether, places such as Spain are looking at smarter ways to manage tourism. Capacity planning, spreading visitors geographically, encouraging off-season travel and promoting lesser-known regions all formed part of the discussion.

It was refreshing to hear from the Spanish Tourist Office that the issue isn't always about too many tourists, but often about too many tourists in the same place, at the same time.

For travellers, this presents an exciting opportunity.

Some of Europe's most rewarding experiences lie beyond the iconic hotspots. Travelling in shoulder seasons often means quieter streets, more authentic encounters and a more relaxed pace—all without compromising on quality.

At Woodward & Lane, that's something we already encourage when designing bespoke itineraries.

Climate change is already influencing how we travel

Climate resilience featured throughout the conference.

Discussions highlighted how rising temperatures, increasingly unpredictable weather and climate-related disruption are already affecting traveller behaviour.

One statistic particularly resonated: around 81% of European travellers say climate considerations are already influencing their holiday decisions.

Destinations are responding too, developing long-term climate adaptation strategies rather than simply reacting to challenges as they arise.

For travellers, this may mean considering different times of year, exploring alternative destinations or embracing slower itineraries that reduce pressure on popular locations.

The future of travel isn't necessarily travelling less—but travelling more thoughtfully.

The Intrepid Effect is Intrepid Travel's new campaign showcasing how responsible travel creates meaningful benefits for local people and places through real experiences and authentic storytelling.

Purpose matters—but authenticity matters even more

Another recurring theme was communication.

Travellers are increasingly looking for holidays that create positive impact, but they're also becoming much better at spotting vague sustainability claims.

The message from speakers was clear:

Purpose must be backed by evidence.

Rather than making sweeping environmental statements, businesses should communicate clearly, use accessible language and share real stories that demonstrate measurable impact.

That feels particularly relevant for luxury travel.

Guests aren't looking to compromise on comfort—they simply want confidence that their journey is supporting local communities, protecting natural environments and leaving destinations better than they were found.

Behavioural change is often more powerful than technology

While technology has an important role to play, one of the most interesting discussions centred around human behaviour.

Whether reducing food waste in hotels, encouraging guests to explore alternative neighbourhoods or making sustainability simpler to understand, many speakers agreed that small behavioural changes can create significant collective impact.

Sometimes it's less about inventing new solutions and more about making better choices easier.

Slow travel continues to gather momentum

Rail travel, longer stays and deeper connections with destinations were recurring topics throughout the day.

Although barriers remain—particularly around cost and infrastructure—the appetite for slower, more connected travel continues to grow.

Rather than rushing through multiple destinations, travellers increasingly want time to properly experience a place, meet local people and immerse themselves in its culture.

This feels particularly aligned with bespoke travel planning. After all, memorable journeys aren't measured by how many destinations you tick off, but by the experiences that stay with you long after you return home. Luxury travel doesn't always require a passport. Sometimes it simply means looking at familiar places with fresh eyes.

England's vineyards offer exactly that. They combine craftsmanship, outstanding hospitality and beautiful countryside into experiences that feel every bit as rewarding as many of Europe's better-known wine regions.

For those willing to explore a little closer to home, they may prove to be one of England's best-kept secrets. We have a future article on these vineyards being released next week.

The future of luxury travel

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the conference was that luxury and sustainability are no longer opposing ideas.

In many ways, they're becoming inseparable.

Luxury increasingly means travelling at the right pace, choosing destinations thoughtfully, supporting local businesses, avoiding overcrowded experiences and leaving a positive legacy. It means travelling with intention.

At Woodward & Lane, that's exactly how we believe travel should be designed. Exceptional journeys should not only create unforgettable memories—they should also respect the people, places and environments that make those experiences possible.

The travel industry still has work to do, but the conversations taking place at this year's TTG Fairer Travel Conference gave genuine cause for optimism.
